What is the AQI?

The EPA and your State environmental agency measure pollution in the air. Then they use the Air Quality Index, or AQI, to tell the people about the air. An index can be a quick way to tell people how good or bad something is. The AQI uses colors, and numbers, and words to tell you about the air.

AQI Colors
AQI colors tell you how healthy the air is to breathe that day. The colors go from Green to Yellow to Orange to Red to Purple to Maroon, each color telling you that the air is less clean than the color before. Green is the best air quality.

Air Pollution and Health
One thing the AQI does is help you understand what the air quality around you means to your health. Each of the AQI colors has a word or phrase to go with it that tells you something about health. These are the colors and the health words that go with them.

AQI Colors - Health Word(s)
Green - Good
Yellow - Moderate
Orange - Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
Red - Unhealthy
Purple - Very Unhealthy
Maroon - Hazardous

Carbon Footprint

Climate change has become one of the major challenges for mankind and the natural environment. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released into the atmosphere in ever rapidly growing volumes are recognised to be responsible for this change. Carbon footprint quantification, analysis and reduction are key to preventing this.

THE ABSURD REPORT

- Of the 186 billion tons of CO2 that enter earth’s atmosphere each year from all sources, only 6 billion tons are from human activity. Approximately 90 billion tons come from biologic activity in earth’s oceans and another 90 billion tons from such sources as volcanoes and decaying land plants.

-At 368 parts per million CO2 is a minor constituent of earth’s atmosphere–
less than 4/100ths of 1% of all gases present. Compared to former geologic times, earth’s current atmosphere is CO2- impoverished.

-CO2 is odorless, colorless, and tasteless. Plants absorb CO2 and emit oxygen as a waste product. Humans and animals breathe oxygen and emit CO2 as a waste product. Carbon dioxide is a nutrient, not a pollutant, and all life– plants and animals alike– benefit from more of it. All life on earth is carbon-based and CO2 is an essential ingredient. When plant-growers want to stimulate plant growth, they introduce more carbon dioxide.

- CO2 that goes into the atmosphere does not stay there but is continually recycled by terrestrial plant life and earth’s oceans– the great retirement home for most terrestrial carbon dioxide.

Fun With CO2

When my husband picked up the CO2 cylinder three weeks ago, the guy at theshop gave him two washers - one soft and one hard. I didn't know about thisuntil this week-end when I noticed that the pressure reading on theregulator indicated that the tank was getting very low.On Sunday I took the regulator off and found these things. :( Theyprevented the regulator from being screwed on properly and allowed the CO2to slowly escape. (So THAT'S what he was fussing about!)On the up side, my Geranium, which three weeks ago was a pale,forlorn-looking thing has turned a dark green and has 3 flowers on it, andthe fern above my bedside table has trebled in size. .....and I thought itwas the fertilizer.....my bedroom had the "greenhouse effect" for sure!!!!!

G. Kadar
no longer the techno moron when it comes to CO2 cylinders

Simple ways to reduce carbon dioxide

Travel

1)Cut out short car trips.
Cars release the most emissions when cold. Plan out your shopping so you can make fewer trips to the store each week.

2)Remove unnecessary weight from your vehicle; this will cut down fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions

3)One of the greatest fuel guzzling issues is caused by improper tire inflations.
Use public transport wherever possible - if public transport is lacking in your area; make some noise with local officials!

Home

1)If you don't need it, switch it off at the wall.
Appliances running on standby power consume a great deal of energy, unnecessarily.
Take shorter showers and use the shower instead of the bath (saves a stack of water too!)

2)Turn down the heat or air-conditioning a fraction.
Do you really need to get around in summer clothes in winter? Even setting your thermostat up or down a degree or two can make a huge difference in electricity consumption.

3)Recycle whatever you can.
While recycling glass, paper, cans etc. does require energy to reform new products, it's far less than having to mine, drill or harvest the raw resources.

Garden

1)Don't burn leaf litter, mulch or compost it instead - burning vegetation spews great volumes of carbon dioxide and other heat trapping pollutants into the atmosphere

Food

1)Try to source locally, organically grown fruits and vegetables. Some green produce is shipped thousands of miles in refrigerated trucks before it hits your supermarket

2)Cut down a little on red meat - the livestock industry is responsible for millions of tonnes of methane, a greenhouse gas, entering our atmosphere each year.

General purchases

1)Before buying anything, ask yourself - "Do I really need this?" Rampant consumerism plays a huge role in carbon emissions as production cycles are for the most part energy intensive and one of the by-products of the cycle is carbon dioxide - not to mention other toxic chemicals. When purchasing, keep "green" close to mind.

Causes Of the Increase In CO2
Much of the rise in CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere over the past 11,000 years (the warmer period following the end of the last major glacial period) occurred prior to the industrial revolution; and much of that rise has been attributed to release of CO2 from the oceans as they gradually warmed following the end of the last glacial period. The amount of CO2 that the oceans can hold is temperature dependent; and changes in the average temperature of the oceans occur much more slowly than changes in temperature at the surface of the Earth.

“As human-caused biodiversity loss and climate disruption gain ground, we need to keep our sights clear and understand that the measure of a threat is not a matter of whether it is made on purpose, but of how much loss it may cause. It's an ancient habit to go after those we perceive to be evil because they intended to do harm. It's harder, but more effective, to "go after," meaning to more effectively educate and socialize, those vastly larger numbers of our fellow humans who are not evil, but whose behavior may in fact be far more destructive in the long run." (Ed Ayres, editor of Worldwatch magazine, Nov/Dec 2001)

Facts about Carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere

Carbon dioxide in air is considered to be a greenhouse gas because of its ability to absorb infrared light.

The concentration of CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere has been increasing at a noticeable rate for much of the past century, There is much interest and concern over the inter-relationship between the levels of carbon dioxide in air and the subject of global warming,
Carbon dioxide plays a major role as a component of the carbon cycle in which carbon is exchanged between the atmosphere, the terrestrial biosphere (which includes freshwater systems and soil), the oceans, and sediments (including fossil fuels). These interactions are complex and widespread. They undoubtedly can be, and are, influenced by many types of human activities, but the extent to which humans have impacted these processes, and will impact them in the future, remains the subject of much research and debate.

Here are 8 simple things you can do to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide.

1)Change a light
Replacing one regular bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb will save 150 pounds of carbon
dioxide a year.
2)Drive less
Walk, bike, carpool, or take mass transit more often. You’ll save one pound of carbon
dioxide for every mile you don’t drive.
3)Recycle more
You save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year by recycling just half of your household
waste.
4)Check your tires
Keeping your tires inflated properly can improve gas mileage by more than 3%. Every gallon
of gas saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the air.
5)Use less hot water
It takes a lot of energy to heat water. Use less hot water by installing a low-flow showerhead
(350 pounds of CO2 saved per year) and wash your clothes in cold or warm water (500
pounds of CO2 saved per year).

6)Be thermostat smart
Moving your thermostat down just 2 degrees in winter and up 2 degrees in summer saves
about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
7)Plant a tree
A single tree will absorb 1 ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. And try not to cut a tree
down unless it’s absolutely necessary!
8)Turn off electronic devices
Simply turning off your television, DVD player, stereo, and computer when you’re not using
them will save thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Minimising heat wastage

[]Making sure you have the most energy-efficient boiler and heating system in your home
[]Turning off radiators in rooms or areas that are not being used

Increase your awareness
The products or goods that you buy can also indirectly influence your carbon footprint. Be aware of what you are buying, how your purchases might have been produced and the potential impact they might have on the environment.

[]Avoid buying fruit or vegetables that are out of season (they may well have been flown in from abroad)
[]Try growing your own fruit and vegetables or purchase locally produced farmed goods (you’ll know that they have not travelled across the UK to get to your supermarket)
[]Avoid buying bottled water if the local water is perfectly safe to drink (the bottled water may have come from a long way away, or even abroad)
[]Try not to buy over-packaged goods (use your judgement and buy an alternative if necessary).
[]Recycle as much of your household waste as possible (read our guide to recycling waste for more advice and tips)
[]Re-use anything that makes sense, such as plastic bags, and avoid buying disposable versions of products, such as razors
[]Ask your energy supplier to switch you to one of its green energy tariffs (it’s one of the easiest and quickest ways to reduce your carbon footprint).
